Columbine Lake 13ers. This was a beautiful outing to a rarely climbed unranked 13er and a stunningly blue lake. As a bonus we climbed a ranked 13er on the way out. There are several trailhead options to access this lake and surrounding peaks. We chose to start at the end of FR 821 which started at the big switchback on US 550 just south of Red. The elevation gains and losses plus the altitude makes the trip challenging. We were averaging 1 mile/hr and were grown men. The ranger also told us the distances on the map are wrong and the trail signs shows the distances a bit further. Other trails it intersects include the Columbine Lake Trail and the Caribou Pass Trail. The latter climbs through alpine tundra to nearly 12,000 feet; crossing the Pass requires crossing a narrow ledge at dizzying heights Ice Lakes.
